Designed in part by Bob Moog and Dan Pearce for Norlin and distributed by Gibson in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Lab Series L5 is truly a sleeper vintage amp. It'll do jazz (Allan Holdsworth used an L5), it'll do blues (BB King used L5s), it'll do rock (Ty Tabor used an L5 on the first few King's X records).

Channel one is similar in tone to a Fender Twin: loud and clean. But this is one of a handful of solid state amps that doesn't behave or sound like a solid state amp. You get that great tube-like tone even at low volume. Makes a great clean platform for pedals or for smoky jazz tones.

Channel two is where things start to get interesting. From the edge of break-up all the way to full-on saturated overdrive, you can dial-in any sound for any style of music. In addition to standard features like gain, bass, and treble, channel two has a few unique analog circuits to shape tone:

- Semi-parametric mid EQ. Select the frequency (from 100 Hz all the way up to 6.4 kHz) that you would like to cut or boost.

- The Moog-designed Multifilter is used to enhance upper-midrange harmonic distortion without ice-picking your ears.

- Optical compressor can be used to emulate compression that happens naturally in a tube amp at higher volumes.

- Accutronics reverb tank.
