William Somerset Maugham se je rodil v Parizu leta 1874. Govoril je francosko, še preden je spregovoril besedo angleško, čemur nekateri kritiki pripisujejo čistost njegovega sloga.
Njegovi starši so zgodaj umrli in Maugham je po nesrečnem otroštvu, ki ga je pretresljivo zapisal v Of Human Bondage , postal kvalificiran zdravnik. Toda pisanje je bilo njegov pravi poklic. Deset let pred prvim uspehom je skoraj dobesedno stradal med prelivanjem romanov in iger.
Maugham je pisal v času, ko je eksperimentalna modernistična literatura, kot so William Faulkner, Thomas Mann, James Joyce in Virginia Woolf, pridobivala vse večjo priljubljenost in osvajala kritike. V tem kontekstu je bil njegov navaden prozni slog kritiziran kot "tako tkivo klišejev", da se človek končno čudi nad pisateljevo zmožnostjo zbrati toliko in nad njegovo neizogibno nezmožnostjo, da bi karkoli postavil na individualen način.
