The author focuses on the current attitudes to art, architecture and design manifested in what has come to be called the "post-modern era". In the 1980s the art of previous avant-gardes which both celebrated technological advance and challenged the material values of capitalist society has been embraced into museums and the traditional hierarchy of values in modern art has apparently been eradicated. What Hewison sets out to present is an indication of ways in which contemporary artists in various media are seeking to offer a challenege to official values and now they may contribute to a "critical culture" for the nineties, in place of the philosophiocal stagnation of the current decade.

"The turn of the entary raises expectations. The end of a millennium promises apocalypse and revelation. But at the close of the twentieth century the gulden age seems behind as, not ahead. The endgame of the 1990s promises neither nirvana nor armageddon, but entropy.

Yet should it?

In his previous book, The Heritage Industry, Robert Hewisan tised a critical rye on the obsetuun of the 1980s with the art and artefacts of the past, and gave a new phrase to the language with his identification of the lack of confidence in the art st the present that the heritage industry betrays.
In future Tense he locuses on current attitudes to art, design, architecture and urban life manifested in what has become known as the "post-Modern' era. In the 1980s the art of the avam-garde has been trapped in museums and the traditional hierarchy of values in modern art has apparently been eradicated. There is no new, only the neo. Art has become style, and culture merely another commodity to be exploited by the flourishing information industry.

Yet, an Hewison shows, artists and writers continue to break through the screes of cultural conservation and commercial Philistinism to challenge official values and offer a pasionate vnion of future pessibilities. Derek Jarman, Gregory Motzan, DVB, Helen Chadwich, Bill Woodtow, Tony Cragg, Salman Rushdie, lain Sinclair, Ren O'Donnell, Nigri Coates, Gaby Agit, Tilda Swinton. These are some of the artists who point the way to a new critical culture for the 1990s, in place of the stagnation of the past decade.
